"The Wilhelmsens elsker Terje Nicolaisen - 1974"

I've listened a lot to this album, and as I said, and I just have to say, that I love it all the way through. Because here we are undoubtedly talking about an all-around artist and songwriter who deserves a much bigger name than he already has - just saying - due to this fabulous release alone.

Nicolaisen's oeuvre can be described as an uninterrupted, unfiltered stream of consciousness that resonates from his adequate viewpoint as an artist, musician and fellowman

When I was at the Prado Museum, I saw in one of Goya's pictures (Perro Semihundido) a figure that clearly stood out in the picture and in the epiphany, I thought this was sensational
- that the museum itself had not seen this?

I was asked by colleague Jeanette Christensen and Anne Marit Austbø to show and help students how to investigate the possibility of using portraits / drawings as a tool for political means, in this case to highlight the situation of imprisoned writers in Azerbaijan.

Alive In Berlin - Europals

Fiesta Mayor På Ole Bulls Plass 1998

Beneath an umbrella on Ole Bulls plass in Bergen in spring 1998, I gained a greater understanding of the potential melancholy in Terje’s oeuvre. As part of the Bergen Festival, he presented the installation Fiesta Mayor, reminiscences from a Spanish village festival: pennants, lights and music unreachably high up on the trees in the square. The work proved to be a much-loved blend of his artistic populism and his romantic proletarian attitude to life and his own ancestry. Geir Tore Holm (2000)

Instructions:

1. Look for a flat surface, put together the five largest pieces in such a way that it assembles a museal space.

2. Use the smallest piece as an artwork and place it according to the space.

3. Observe the placement, lightning and expression that your placement represents. Repeat actions as much as you need.

4. Alternatively, find domestic objects as an artwork and place them around. 5. When finished playing the game can easely be left as decorative element in your home.

He thus began his own exclusive association and started conjecturing what I would define a deliberate self-isolation from the collectivity through the non-intervention in the social/political debate. An individualistic, thus melancholic, attitude of resistance against a society whose communal activities are highly structured, and mainly based on consumerist activities.

According to Kunstnerforbundet 3000 visitors saw the exhibition

Parallelle Projekte In Der Stadt Münster 1997

...in 1997, Nicolaisen decided to participate with a parasitic project. He went to Münster, found an appropriate exhibition space in a pavilion, produced a catalogue, posters, postcards and a press release and attended the official press conference. In short, he acted as if he were part of the Sculpture Project Münster. His actions were fuelled by impatience, a feeling of not wanting to wait until he was seventy....

But whereas Peter Weibel and Michael Asher emptied the space in order to show the gallery as an architectural framing device, Nicolaisen chose a different strategy to objectivise the space. The gallery itself was closed to the public during the exhibition and could only be seen from outside. In this way, the gallery was transformed from a venue for socialising and experiencing art to an inaccessible sphere that only emitted an enigmatic, yellow light.

Planka i Tromsø #1

Terje Nicolaisen - Paperwork

Henie Onstad Art Centre, Bærum
03.02.2011 - 01.05.2011

Through the fact that all his works are only suggestions on events and projects that could have been realized, in the form of detached sentences, he shows us a forty year old point, which is just as important to take in today: - That an artist is not necessarily a producer of objects, but rather an initiator of vibrant, independent thought processes in the viewer.

Therefore, it has never been more important to examine the visualisation of the body than now. With this backdrop, Nicolaisen examines the body as a "common space" in imperfect imagery, where bodily figures in absurd poses and missing limbs represent a chaotic place in an endangering world.

Yellow Lights

During three years I installed yellow lights in 14 different museum and art institutions throughout Norway, in Helsinki and in Münster, Germany.
